Tamper Evident Tape

Understanding Tamper-Evident Tape

Tamper-evident tape is a high-security adhesive material designed to provide immediate, irreversible visual proof of unauthorized access. Unlike standard packing tape, which can often be peeled off and replaced without a trace, tamper-evident tape leaves a clear “footprint” if someone attempts to open a package.

How It Works

The tape utilizes a multi-layered chemical and physical construction. When the tape is applied, the adhesive bonds to the surface. If the tape is pulled up, the layers delaminate (separate), causing a hidden message—usually words like “VOID”, “OPENED”, or a checkerboard pattern—to appear both on the surface of the box and on the tape itself.

Most high-grade tapes also feature:

  • Pressure Sensitivity: The bond strengthens over time, making it harder to remove cleanly.
  • Chemical Resistance: Designed to react if someone tries to use heat (hairdryers) or solvents (chemicals) to lift the adhesive without triggering the message.
  • Sequential Numbering: Often includes unique IDs or barcodes to prevent a thief from simply replacing the entire strip of tape with a new one.
